From Dr. Charles Savage to Everyone:  10:35 AM

As David Hales suggests, we need a profound rethinking of our complex reality.  Has Karl Polanyi’s recounting “The Great Transformation,” need an even GREATER TRANSFORMATION to realign life for the next 500 million years?
His message: “The major tragedy attendant on the Industrial Revolution was brought about not by the callousness and greed of profit-seeking capitalists—thought there was inhumanity enough in the record—but by the social devastation of an uncontrolled system, the market economy.”
The Great Acceleration site shows this need clearly: http://www.igbp.net/globalchange/greatacceleration.4.1b8ae20512db692f2a680001630.html

Profound challenges indeed?  Are we ready?

A major report “Climate-induced migration and modern slavery: a toolkit for policymakers”  just came out today. Raising awareness about this mounting problem may help strengthen commitment to climate action. People of faith are very attuned to human rights.

I’m interested in learning and participating in a conversation supportive of “religious multilateralism” in local to international circles, something I’m hearing more about from within the Faith for Earth Initiative.  With so many international convenings this fall, including a major emphasis upon biodiversity in November at COP 15, how will we move from engaging ideas (Laudato Is, Al Mizan) to a shared set of outcomes we are multilaterally pursuing as religious and spiritual traditions.

From Esben Larsen to Everyone:  10:44 AM

At the World Resources Institute in Washington DC, we have developed Science Based Targets for Faiths to establish emission baselines for faith-owned assets such as houses of worship, schools, hospitals, land, but also on energy consumption, food waste, and transportation. When the baseline is formed, we can develop reduction targets and plans to lower emissions and strengthen climate advocacy based on real time actions. See more here: https://www.wri.org/initiatives/faith-and-sustainability

From Beth Piggush to Everyone:  10:44 AM

The Global Catholic Church is working on the “Laudato Si Action Platform” with 7 goals, for 7 years with seven different stakeholders. The religious congregations part of the stakeholders are most aligned to work with the other (6) stakeholders. The 7 goals are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. I believe this is the opportunity for Catholics to be more formally part of the interreligious efforts and secular efforts. https://laudatosiactionplatform.org/ We now need to be in tune to COP26, regional and local policy for the change we all talk about needing.

I wear 2 hats – as a religious leader and also as a leader in the philanthropy world.  Important for this group to know that there are many hundreds of foundations around the world that have signed on to a very similar statement to the ones being discussed here.  They are very much aligned can be mutually supportive at COP and subsequently.

Why in the world we don’t/didn’t have inspired, informed and committed individuals from organizations like the Parliament, among the political decision making few in any country in the world who decides the fate of this beautiful planet and life on it. Whose knowledge is incomplete? the politician or the theorists?

From Grove Harris to Everyone:  11:11 AM

Human rights is an important perspective to center. Outcomes of the food summit need to be held accountable for impacts on people and do clearly linked to climate change

Divestment from fossil fuels is critically important. However, right now my ability to travel, and heat my home is totally dependant on oil and gas. These are wonderful sources of easy to use and readily available energy. We need a large scale energy source to replace fossil fuels. Without oil and gas I would have to stay in my house and would get very cold here in Canada.

From Jeffrey Barber to Everyone:  11:13 AM

A coalition of far right/conservative faith-based groups with minimal concerns about climate change have had a major influence on US government policy. What lessons should we draw from this as to our strategies to raise citizen awareness of the moral implications of climate denial?
