From Confinement to Our Spiritual Awakening

In his essay “From Confinement to Our Spiritual Awakening,” Dzambling Cho Tab Khen examines the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting confinement as an opportunity for individual and collective spiritual transformation. The author argues that this period, although marked by difficulty and uncertainty, presents a propitious moment for introspection through meditation, yoga, and silence. The text introduces and explores the Buddhist practice of “Samvega” (a sense of spiritual urgency born from the recognition of suffering) and “Pasada” (a confidence and serenity that arises upon finding a path to overcome that suffering) as a means to transmute negative emotions into a spiritual awakening. Furthermore, the essay highlights the importance of cultivating the “Seven Factors of Enlightenment” (Mindfulness, Investigation, Energy, Happiness, Relaxation, Meditation, and Equanimity) as fundamental elements for achieving a new consciousness and spiritual well-being during and after confinement.
