How to Govern Our Material and Spiritual Tomorrow?

A Call for Ethical, Spiritual, and Planetary Leadership at the United Nations
Presentation by Dr. Alfredo Sfeir-Younis

During a special session of the NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns (CSVGC-NY/CONGO), held at United Nations Headquarters in New York, Dr. Alfredo Sfeir-Younis delivered a powerful and timely reflection on the future of global governance.

In this presentation, Dr. Sfeir-Younis examines the deep structural crisis facing the multilateral system and the growing disconnect between the United Nations and the peoples it was created to serve. He argues that the UN Charter—conceived in the aftermath of World War II—no longer responds adequately to today’s intertwined geopolitical, social, environmental, and moral crises.

Beyond diagnosis, this session offers concrete proposals for renewal: an updated UN Charter grounded in universal ethics and spirituality; shared responsibility for global public goods; recognition of citizens of the world as legitimate actors in global governance; and a reimagining of leadership, calling for a UN Secretary-General who serves as a moral and spiritual compass for humanity.

At its core, this presentation is a call for courage, conscience, and immediate action. It affirms that governance without values is unsustainable, and that the material and spiritual evolution of humanity must be addressed together if we are to avoid the collapse of the multilateral system and restore hope for future generations.
